Tweetdeck has become something of a popular app of late, which is kind of surprising to me as it seems very detailed and very in-depth and as I say in the video review above, Twitter is all about simplicity. But one of Tweetdeck’s first advantages is the fact that it uses the Adobe Air platform and is therefore compatible with both Mac and PC with ease. Some people may see this as a bad thing especially as, if you have an older system, it does effect performance.
However once you get past Tweetdeck’s rather overbearing interface, you’ll find that as a free Twitter app, it’s extremely versatile and very easy to use.
Tweetdeck has all the features that pretty much any other Twitter desktop app has including a translator, a URL shortener, the ability to add pictures, retweeting, Direct Messaging etc. and it even throws in a couple of things of it’s own. For example, if your tweet is just a little too long you can shorten the text by a click of the button. It will give your message in effect a kind of ‘text talk’ look, removing unnecessary vowels and other letters so that the word can be understood without it needing to be at it’s full length. However if you hate that kind of thing like one or two of the TwitTwitTwitter.com team do, then avoid the button! But it’s still nice to have.
What’s also great about Tweetdeck is that you can change the way the interface looks quite easily by simply selecting new colors for the different aspects from the Settings menu. You can also add as many Twitter accounts as you like to it and also add Facebook, MySpace and LinkedIn accounts additionally which is a nice touch. All this is adding up to make Tweetdeck one of the very best Twitter apps out there.
So why only 4 Tweets our of 5? Primarily because it is quite bulky, it does take up some processing speed and it can be a little overbearing. If you like that, then this is great for you, you will love Tweetdeck. If you don’t find a simpler free Twitter desktop app such as Nambu for the Mac and one of the many choices for the PC that we are getting ready to review here.
But as an overall free Twitter client app, Tweetdeck is certainly up there with the very, very best.
